How these figures are worked out
- Income Tax: £12,570 Personal Allowance, then 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. The allowance shrinks by £1 for every £2 over £100,000.
- National Insurance: 8% on pay between £12,570 and £50,270, 2% above (category A).
- Same as 2025-26: GOV.UK lists the same allowance, bands and NI rates for both years, so take-home pay before student loans is unchanged. Student loan thresholds rose on 6 April 2026: see what you'd repay on each plan with the student loan repayment calculator.
- Assumptions: tax code 1257L, one job, no benefits in kind, no student loan or pension unless shown.
The pattern to notice: you keep 72p of each extra pound between £12,570 and £50,270, 58p between £50,270 and £100,000, just 38p between £100,000 and £125,140 because of the Personal Allowance taper, and 53p above that. Read more in the £100,000 tax trap guide.
